African Lion
Moremi Game Reserve, Botswana, Africa

Male lions are highly distinctive and easily recognized by their mane, an impressive fringe of long hair encircling their head and necks, which offers a measure of protection while fighting. Although lionesses are the hunters, males are the defenders. Protecting territories, which may include 100 square miles, males will mark the area with urine, warn intruders with a menacing roar, and chase off all trespassers.
